You can find many reviews of Bluetooth Waterproof Headphones on this site. Many of them are certified as IPX7. But what are ipx7 waterproof headphones?
IP code ( ingress protection ), also called IP rating, identifies the resistance of electrical equipment against the intrusion of foreign objects (typically dust) and liquids. The code consists of a two-digit number, the first value indicating the degree of protection just before entering foreign objects and the second number indicating the degree of protection against water penetration. The maximum protection degree can be IP68.
The following tables provide a detailed description of the numbers:
Degree | Dangerous touch | Intrusion of foreign objects |
---|---|---|
IP 0x | without protection | without protection |
IP 1x | palms | big ones |
IP 2x | finger | small |
IP 3x | tool (> 2.5 mm) | small ones |
IP 4x | tool, wire (> 1 mm) | very small |
IP 5x | by any means | dust partially |
IP 6x | by any means | dust completely |
Degree | waterproof definition (IPX specification) |
---|---|
IPx0 | without protection |
IPx1 | Protected against falling water at rain equivalent of 3 to 5 mm of falling water per minute over 10 minutes. The unit is located in its working position. |
IPx2 | Protected against falling water when the appliance is in the 15-degree position. Same as IP x1, except that the unit is tested in 4 positions, tilted 15 ° at each position from the normal operating position. |
IPx3 | Protected against water spray. Water sprays at 60 degrees vertically, at a rate of 10 liters per minute and a pressure of 80-100 kN / m2 for 5 minutes. |
IPx4 | Protected against splashing water. Same as for IP x3, except that the water sprays at all angles. |
IPx5 | Also called water resistant. Protected against splashing water. The water drives a 6.3 mm nozzle at all angles at a flow of 12.5 liters per minute at a pressure of 30 kN / m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. |
IPx6 | Protected against waves. The water is directed by a 12.5 mm nozzle at all angles at a flow of 100 liters per minute at a pressure of 100 kN / m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. |
IPx7 | Protected against immersion in water. Immersion for 30 minutes to a depth of 1 meter. |
IPx8 | Protected against sinking into the water. The device is capable of continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by the device manufacturer. |
The Most Used IP Ratings
If you put the two tables together, you can find the most common IP rating in the IP rating chart below:
IP Rating | The meaning of IP Ratings |
---|---|
IP54 | IP 54 rating means, that the device is partially protected against dust, and fully protected against splashing water that sprays at all angles. |
IP55 | IP 55 rating means, that the device is partially protected against dust, and fully protected against splashing water at a pressure of 30 kN / m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. |
IP65 | IP 65 rating means, that the device is fully protected against dust, and fully protected against splashing water at a pressure of 30 kN / m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. |
IP66 | IP 66 rating means, that the device is fully protected against dust, and fully protected against splashing water at a pressure of 100 kN / m2 for 3 minutes from a distance of 3 meters. |
IP67 | IP 67 rating means, that the device is fully protected against dust, and fully protected against immersion in water for 30 minutes to a depth of 1 meter. |
IP68 | IP 68 rating means, that the device is fully protected against dust, and fully protected against sinking into the water. The device is capable of continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by the device manufacturer. |
Conclusion
In practice, this means that if the device meets the protection class IP67, it is fully dustproof (numeral 6 in the label) while being protected against water penetration to a depth of one meter for 30 minutes (digit 7 in the name).
Some devices on the market meet IP57 protection. This in practice means that they are partially dust-proof and at the same time last for 30 minutes at a maximum depth of 1 meter without damaging them.
